Exploring the potential augmentation/exacerbation of cognitive function on intermittent exercise performance in combination with environmental stressors Ìý

Abstract

Soccer is an intermittent team-sport played over 90 min between two 45-min halves interspersed with a 15-min interval (Harper et al, 2016). Typically, throughout match-play the distances covered by elite soccer players range from 10km – 13.5km (Di Salvo et al., 2007), at both high and low speeds (Castagna et al., 2017).ÌýIn particular, periodsÌýof match-play atÌývery highÌýor maximal speeds canÌýdetermineÌýmatch success (Harper et al, 2019). For example, Faude et al, (2012) reported from the German first national league throughout the 2007/08 season a total of 409 recordings of goals. 83% of goals reported a powerful action preceding a goal or assist. As well asÌýdemonstratingÌýa significant increase (P < 0.001) in straight sprintingÌýimmediatelyÌýpreceding goals and assists. Sprints preceding goals would require attention and concentration from defendersÌýattemptingÌýto prevent a goal from occurring.Ìý

Research Questions

  • What is the main improvement/decrement in function of cognition that is affected during performance in a variety of environmental conditions?
  • What is the test-re-test reliability of cognitive function in hot, temperate, and cold environments during a 90 min Non-motorised treadmill-based soccer-specific simulation?

About Me

In 2020 I successfully completed my BSc in Sport and Exercise Science and fortunately I am continuing my studies onto a PhD.

My main interest is developing the knowledge surrounding footballer’s cognitive capabilities in hypothermic conditions. In addition, to developing the base of knowledge surrounding cognitive function in soccer players performing in a variety of environmental conditions. Aside from my studies, I enjoy playing football whenever possible whether it be at Sunday league level or playing at university level with the men’s football team.
